#20: Campy, Coverless Comics

I went back to the van and put on my civvies, then the four of us—Samson, Preston, Koz, and I—met at an outdoor table in front of the bookstore to compare notes.
     Preston reported that at that very moment agents from ICHHL were investigating Mervyn Goldfarb’s apartment. Sure enough, he was formerly employed by Dr. Joe Levitch’s lab years before when it was still located in Ann Arbor, and recently had taken to cooking up batches of homemade Mega-Soldier Syrup in his bathtub and selling it to unwary college students at a huge profit. Notes located already seemed to indicate it was an obsolete formula and the Mervyn hadn’t been too particular about following the recipe precisely.

The Origin of Ms. Megaton Man!

These two contiguous panels are from Megaton Man Meets the Uncategorizable X+Thems #1 (Kitchen Sink Press, 1989), originally published in black and white. (I've colored them up for a pitch for the new Megaton Man material I'm creating, either as a new series or graphic novel.) They depict the momentous origin moment when Clarissa James realizes she has somehow gained Megapowers, and subsequently dons the primary-colored costume of the Man of Molecules! Clarissa has always unleashed a certain dynamic energy in me when I draw her, and these panels are a great example, where I was trying to go for a decided Jack Kirby/Big Barda feeling! Ms. MM had a major role in Bizarre Heroes in the 90s, and will have an even bigger role in the new Megaton Man storyline, featuring everyone's return to Megatropolis and the formation of a new Megahero team, the Doom Defiers! Old and New: Seismic Century Shift!

Here is the final (I hope) banner design for the Melaga exhibit opening tomorrow in Brownsville, a collaboration with museum director Patrick Daugherty. It features Megaton Man and Ms. Megaton Man, representing the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, respectively, and symbolic of the pasts and futures for the trajectory of my Megaverse storyline, such as it is unfolding at a snail's pace in my work-in-progress graphic novel. The old white straight male and the young metrosexual woman of color -- will this token political correctness impress anyone as much as it delights me? Only time will tell...

Did Somebody Mention My Name?! Not Likely...

Here is a new panel I penciled on bond layout and inked on Clearprint vellum today (April 21, 2014) featuring Ms. Megaton Man, with Megaton Man horning in on the scene.
